President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has finally broken his silence on the recent massacre in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly killed in an attack by suspected armed herdsmen.
Speaking on Monday during the inauguration of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project in the Federal Capital Territory, the President expressed his condolences to the victims and people of Benue, while calling for calm and national unity.
“I sympathize with the Benue people. I’ve spoken to the governor, the leadership, and the people. I ask them to accept our condolences and try very, very consciously to maintain peace and harmony among themselves,” Tinubu said.
He described Nigeria as “a single large family living in the same house but in different rooms,” stressing the need for unity despite the country’s diversity. “Living together in harmony will be the result of our diversity for prosperity,” the President added.
Addressing the nation’s growing concerns over insecurity and communal violence, Tinubu appealed for emotional restraint.
“We should be able to manage our anger and frustrations,” he urged. “I sympathize with those who have lost their lives. I will adjust my program and go see the Benue people on Wednesday.”
