Bida communities cry out over flooding caused by road project

Residents of Bida, Niger State, have accused the contractors handling the construction of the road from Low-Cost Housing Estate to G.R.A, of diverting drainage water into their communities.

The divertion, they alleged, caused destruction of property worth millions of Naira which include eleven buildings, bridge and culverts worth millions of naira from a heavy downpour last Saturday..

According to them, the two communities have been experiencing erosion issues since 2014, even before the road construction began.

The residents also called on Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago to urgently interven to ensure no further damage is done to their communities.

Mallam Yakubu Mohammed, a stakeholder from the affected communities lamented at the suffering of the people, noting that the rainstorm of last Saturday, rendred many homeless and paralyzed economic activities in the areas.

According to him, ” Our people are seriously suffering, and it’s hard to believe that this is happening in Bida town. The rainfall we had on Saturday 14th June 2025 rendered many people homeless, destroyed some businesses leading to untold hardships’.

” We are calling to governor Muhammad Umaru Bago to come to our aid and rescue our people,” he appealed

However, the state government has promised to commence the rehabilitation of the affected area, specifically the one-kilometer Man Musa Kodogi/Nasarafu road within 48 hours to prevent reoccurance.

The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Mohammed Yakubu Kolo, who led a delegation to carry out on the spot assessment of the damage.

He also sympathised with the affected persons over the loss of property and sources of livelihood.

It was gathered the heavy rainfall which caused the damage fell between midnight to 8am on Saturday.
