Benue massacre: Amnesty International slams Nigerian govt over rising killings

Amnesty International has criticized the Nigerian government following the killing of over 100 people by gunmen in Yelewata, Benue State.

The attack, which happened from late Friday into the early hours of Saturday, 14 June 2025, left many dead, several missing, and dozens injured without proper medical care.

In a post on X on Saturday, Amnesty International said the government’s failure to stop the killings was dangerous.

“The horrifying killing of over 100 people by gunmen that invaded Yelewata shows the security measures government claims to be implementing in the state are not working,” the group said.

According to Amnesty, many of the victims were locked in their homes and burnt alive.

The rights group also said that the attackers left several people injured, while many others are still missing. It warned that the continued violence in Benue is forcing people to flee their homes and may lead to food shortages since many of the victims are farmers.

“Amnesty International has been documenting the alarming escalation of attacks across Benue state where gunmen have been on a killing spree with utter impunity,” the group said.

“The Nigerian authorities’ failure to stem the violence is costing people’s lives and livelihoods, and without immediate action, many more lives may be lost,” Amnesty warned.

The organization called on the government to end the bloodshed and bring those responsible to justice.
