Thirteen suspects facing serious charges including kidnapping and culpable homicide have escaped from police custody in Nasarawa State.
Sources within the command confirmed to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama that the jailbreak occurred in the early hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m.
The suspects reportedly broke through the rear wall of their detention cell at the Area Command facility where they were being held by the officers in charge of Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cultism units.
Those who escaped include high-profile detainees such as; Jamilu Abdulsalam, Abdullahi Yahaya, Usman Yerima, Abba Musa, Idris Hussaini, Abu Amu, Usman Hassan, Hussaini Sani, Ibrahim Shuaibu, Hamza Abubakar, and Usman Ibrahim, also known as “Tecno”.
Charges against them range from chain theft and kidnapping to culpable homicide, attempted kidnapping, and causing grievous hurt.
One suspect, Abdullahi Muhammed, was reportedly in detention on the order of a court.
Efforts to rearrest the fugitives are said to be ongoing, with police deploying various tactical and intelligence units across the state and surrounding areas.
In the aftermath of the escape, the Nasarawa State Police Command has taken disciplinary actions against key officers who were on duty at the time.
The Cell Record Officer, the incident duty officer, the cell guard, and the visiting-round officer have all been queried and are being held accountable pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
