Commonwealth Parliamentary Association re-admits Cross River Assembly

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, CPA, has readmitted the Cross River State House of Assembly to its fold.

The Cross River Assembly had been unable to meet its dues and other financial obligations for some time, which led to its removal.

As a result, it ceased to enjoy the benefits accruing from CPA, including participation in its educational conferences.

Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, while addressing a special plenary session convened on Friday to mark the second year of the 10th Assembly, disclosed that the Cross River Assembly has now been able to offset a significant portion of its indebtedness to CPA and has been readmitted.

Ayambem assured that the outstanding debts will be cleared in no time.

“Some years ago, our branch was delisted from the membership of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association due to our indebtedness of dues to the association.

“I am happy to announce to you that our membership has just been reinstated to enable us to partake in all their conferences.

“We are still looking for a way to totally defray our debts. This will enable us to deepen our legislative knowledge, as we share experience with other members of Commonwealth countries,” he said.

Ayambem also disclosed that going forward, they will focus on more effective legislation, oversight, and monitoring to ensure they meet their obligations to other bodies, and all ministries, departments and agencies, too, comply with budgetary provisions, and in line with the People First mantra of Otu’s government.

He informed the session that over the past two years, they have passed 30 bills, most of which Governor Otu has assented to, adding that nine more are currently at various stages of reading.
