Jigawa demarcates grazing reserves, cattle routes to avert farmers, herders clash

The JIgawa State Government has demarcated 1,280.5 hectares of grazing reserves and 49.6 km of cattle routes in a bid to avert clashes between farmers and herdsmen across the state.

The Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa Ahmad disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of State Executive Council meeting presided by Governor Umar Namadi on Thursday.

He said this was disclosed in the report of the committee set up by Governor Umar Namadi for demarcation of forest and grazing reserves across the state, headed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Malam Bala Ibrahim.

“The report informed the Council of the successful demarcation of 695 hectares of Waza Grazing Reserve, 500Ha Malamawa Gangara, 700Ha Kwarsa Forest, 2,300Ha Jarwawa Forest reserves all in Birnin Kudu LGA, 600Ha Wareri-Guri LGA, 165 hectares of Barwa-Katanga Grazing Reserve Kiyawa LGA and 420 hectares of Zandauru Grazing Reserve in Gwaram LGA, respectively.

“The report revealed the successful demarcation of cattle routes, a 11.3 km at Waza Farm Layout, Baranda Farm Layout covering major stock routes (100 width) 24.7km and Minor Stock routes (30m width) 13.6 km. While, the exercise is still on-going at Bagadaza-Gwaram LG, and the Dakaiyawa in Kaugama is fully demarcated,” Sagir said.

The report revealed that a total of 1,280.5 hectares of grazing reserves and 49.6 km of cattle routes have been demarcated across the state.

Sagir said the council commended the committee for its proactive and strategic efforts in the demarcation of forest and grazing reserves.

He described the move as a laudable initiative that would not only promote environmental sustainability but also enhance peaceful coexistence among communities especially farmers and herders across the state.

DAILY POST reports that the state has witnessed several clashes between farmers and herdsmen, resulting in killings and destruction of properties.
