This is land grabbing’ – Governor Alia raises alarm over killings in Benue

The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has raised alarm over attacks on Otobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area, describing them as acts of land grabbing disguised as random violence.

Speaking in an interview with AIT on Thursday, Governor Alia confirmed that 11 people were killed, several others injured, and many homes were burned down during the attack.

The attackers, described as “horrible, terrible fighters,” reportedly launched an unprovoked assault, indiscriminately killing residents and forcing entire communities to flee in fear.

According to the Governor, these attacks follow a disturbing pattern. “They come, kill anyone in sight regardless of ethnicity, drive everyone out, and after a few weeks, they return in full force for occupation,” he said.

Governor Alia expressed frustration over the lack of arrests, highlighting the ongoing brutality and the absence of consequences for the attackers.

He emphasized the urgent need for improved intelligence and a swift response, stating that he had engaged with the National Security Adviser, NSA, to request stronger protective measures for the affected communities.

“These horrible, terrible fighters are on the front lines. They come and kill any person, irrespective of ethnicity, on their way. They kill them, and all the residents run away. They go back a few weeks later, and then they come in full-fledged for occupation. This is land grabbing,” he stated.

He further revealed that the state has already deployed security personnel to the area, with the Deputy Governor and key security agencies on the ground.

“We’ve lost 11 people. Some villagers are still missing, and we’re hoping that they will be found.”

Governor Alia also assured residents that the NSA is committed to providing the necessary support.
