Ekiti Govt moves to tackle quackery in health sector

The Ekiti State government has said that the proposed Quality of Care Bill 2025, currently before the State House of Assembly, was designed to create a mechanism for setting, monitoring and enforcing standards in public and private health facilities across the state.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services , Dr Oyebanji Filani stated this during a public hearing on the bill at the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

Filani, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Mr Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, stated that the bill seeks to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery standards in the state.

The commissioner noted that the bill was desirable and needed robust contributions from stakeholders at the public hearing.

He stated that the proposed law will ensure accountability and uniformity in healthcare delivery, aligning with the best global practices, prevent malpractices, promote quality services as well as foster citizen’s confidence in the healthcare system of the state.

Earlier in her remarks, the Chairperson, House of Assembly Committee on Health, Human Services and HIV/AIDS, Abimbola Solanke, explained that the public hearing represented a significant step in the journey towards building a healthcare system that is not only accessible and affordable but also consistently safe and responsive.

Solanke emphasised that the bill was not just another piece of legislation but represents a vision that every citizen of Ekiti State deserves access to high-quality health care that is respectful, timely and based on best available evidence.

“Today’s public hearing provides opportunity for inclusive dialogue. We are here to listen, learn and enrich the bill with invaluable insights from healthcare professionals, civil society organisations, development partners and other key stakeholders,” she said.

The committee chairperson lauded the efforts and commitment of the state government at improving the health outcomes of the state.
