The Yola Electricity Distribution Company, YEDC, has issued a strong warning to residents of Taraba State against constructing buildings under or too close to electricity structures, citing serious safety risks.
The warning was delivered by the company’s Regional Manager, Aliyu Aminu, during a stakeholders’ sensitization engagement organized in collaboration with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, on Tuesday in Jalingo.
Aminu emphasized that such unsafe construction practices could endanger lives due to potential exposure to electrical radiation and other hazards.
“There should be a safe distance between any structure and electrical equipment,” he cautioned.
As part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery, Aminu also called on unregistered electricity consumers to promptly register with YEDC.
He highlighted the importance of proper registration and regular bill payments, noting that customers under Band A now enjoy 24-hour electricity supply in many areas of Taraba.
“Timely payment of electricity bills is vital,” a YEDC representative stated. “We do not operate in isolation. We purchase power for our customers and incur additional operational costs, so regular payment is essential to avoid service disruptions.”
The company also urged customers facing issues to use official complaint channels rather than resorting to aggressive or abusive behavior toward staff.
“Harassment or intimidation of YEDC personnel will not be tolerated,” the company said. “We are committed to serving the public, and cooperation from customers helps us do our job more effectively.”
Several stakeholders at the event commended YEDC for improvements in electricity supply across the state, particularly in Jalingo, the capital.
The company reaffirmed its dedication to customer satisfaction, safety, and fostering mutual respect with the communities it serves.
