Sokoto govt directs immediate reporting of metal poisoning cases

The Sokoto State Government has directed immediate reporting of all suspected cases of heavy metal poisoning to the nearest general hospital for prompt medical intervention.

This directive follows the hospitalization of 34 individuals affected by toxic metal exposure, believed to be linked to illegal mining activities in Tureta Local Government Area (LGA).

Speaking to journalists at the State Epidemiological Unit, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruku Umar Abubakar, confirmed the outbreak and emphasized the urgency of reporting new cases.

“All suspected cases must be reported immediately to the nearest general hospital for proper diagnosis and treatment,” Abubakar stated. “Timely medical intervention is crucial in preventing further complications.”

The commissioner disclosed that experts from the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are investigating the extent of exposure and identifying the specific toxic elements responsible for the outbreak.

“The 34 victims of this outbreak are currently receiving medical treatment, while samples from affected individuals have already been taken for further analysis,” he added.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu has directed the Ministry of Health to provide palliatives and nutritional supplements to assist the victims.

Recall thst a similar incident was recorded two years ago in the same LGA, where metal contaminants were discovered in the bodies of individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining.

Officials have also reported suspected cases in Isa and one other LGA, raising concerns over widespread contamination.

Meanwhile, health authorities have urged residents to avoid illegal mining activities and to seek medical help immediately if they experience symptoms related to metal poisoning.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact source of contamination and implement preventive measures against future outbreaks.
