A youth group in Adamawa State has called on Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to grant clemency to Sunday Jackson, a farmer sentenced to death for the killing of a Fulani herdsman.
The Pene da Bwatiye Youth Wing, in collaboration with its national body, has condemned the Supreme Court’s decision upholding Jackson’s death sentence, describing it as a miscarriage of justice.
The incident, which dates back to 2015, occurred in Demsa Local Government Area when Jackson allegedly defended himself during an altercation on his farm.
According to reports, a Fulani herdsman attacked Jackson with a knife after his cattle destroyed the farmer’s crops. In the struggle that ensued, Jackson managed to overpower his attacker, fatally wounding him.
Despite his self-defense claim, the court sentenced him to death by hanging, a verdict that Nigeria’s highest court has now affirmed.
Dr. Pwano Jauro, President of the Youth Wing of the Bwatiye Development Association, has urged Governor Fintiri to intervene, citing his reputation as “the people’s governor.”
The group argues that Jackson’s actions were in self-defense and that executing him could exacerbate tensions between farmers and herders in the region.
They also reference Section 212 of the Nigerian Constitution, which grants state governors the power to commute sentences or grant pardons.
As the case draws growing public attention, many now look to Governor Fintiri to decide Jackson’s fate, a decision that could set a precedent for justice, peace, and self-defense in Adamawa State.
