ACRESAL takes measures to avert flooding in Plateau

Ahead of the upcoming rainy season, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes Project, ACReSAL, in Plateau State said it has made provisions to map out all flood-prone areas in the state.

DAILY POST reports that flooding has been a major challenge in some states of the federation, including Plateau State.

As the rainy season approaches, the fear of the unknown has started creeping in, following past experiences where residents in flood-prone communities have lost their properties, including crops destroyed through land degradation and environmental challenges.

The State Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Mr Garba Gonkol, stated this while briefing journalists in Jos, the state capital.

Gonkol said, “We always ensure an annual work and procurement plan.

“We needed to find out accurate data to enable us to carry out our function effectively.

“We have commenced the rehabilitation of gullies in parts of Jos metropolis,” the State Coordinator maintained.

Gonkol further disclosed that the ongoing fencing of the 18.5-kilometer Jos Wildlife Park is almost completed.

He noted that previously, the state government had no policy document on environment and climate change, which has now been addressed by the present administration in the state.

The state coordinator applauded the present administration for settling its backlog of counterpart funding and for continuing to contribute to the success of the project, which is a collaboration with the World Bank.
