Ogun warns against illegal structures in government schools

Ogun State Government has warned against erecting buildings on lands belonging to government-owned primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across the state.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Sakirudeen Salaam, gave the warning at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, on Thursday.

Salaam stated that some preventive measures to curb illegal developments within the premises of government schools include the establishment of boundaries through fencing and obtaining surveys.

Speaking at the meeting, the Registrar of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun Campus, Bayo Orukotan, called for synergy among government agencies to reduce illegal developments, which are mostly erected by encroachers.

On his part, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Enforcement and Compliance, Babatunde Olugbewesa, stressed the need to report dilapidated structures within government schools to the appropriate authorities to avoid preventable disasters.

Recall that the taskforce set up by the state government in 2024 demolished shanties and illegal structures around school fences and road setbacks in Abeokuta, the state capital, pulling down no fewer than 300 structures.

DAILY POST reports that the demolition exercise is part of the ‘Safe School Initiative’ to ensure adequate security and a conducive teaching and learning environment for students.
