Jigawa govt signs MoU to unlock renewable energy potentials

Governor Mallam Umar Namadi has reaffirmed Jigawa State’s commitment to fostering strategic Public-Private Partnerships, PPPs, with Renewable Energy Service Companies, RESCOs, to accelerate clean energy development.

Speaking at a strategic roundtable, the Governor assured investors of the state’s readiness to provide a stable investment climate and a secure ecosystem for project implementation.

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, REA, Abba Aliyu, presented data-driven insights on Jigawa’s electricity market, highlighting the state’s immense potential for renewable energy expansion.

He explained that Jigawa State will electrify one million people through solar mini-grids, unlocking socioeconomic growth and investment opportunities.

According to him, “Currently, the REA is overseeing 21 mini-grid projects across 21 Local Government Areas in the state under the Nigeria Electrification Programme, NEP, and the African Development Bank’s Minimum Subsidy Tender, MST.”

He said the initiatives aim to provide electricity to over 300,000 residents.

“Over the years, the REA has successfully deployed various off-grid energy solutions in Jigawa State, including solar home systems, mini-grids, streetlights, electric vehicle charging stations, solar-powered irrigation pumps, and grid extension projects.”

Aliyu noted that these interventions continue to enhance the livelihoods of communities across the state.
