US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States will have contact with Russia on Wednesday regarding the agreement reached with Ukraine on a 30-day ceasefire and steps towards ending the war there.
There has been no official response from Moscow since the US-Ukraine talks concluded in Saudi Arabia after more than eight hours, with Kyiv agreeing to a 30-day ceasefire and the US restoring military aid and intelligence sharing.
“We all eagerly await the Russian response and strongly urge them to consider ending all hostilities.
“If they say ‘no’, then obviously we will have to examine everything and determine where we stand in the world and what their true intentions are. If they say no, it will tell us a lot about their goals and mindset,” Rubio said.
He expressed the belief that a ceasefire should and could be monitored to ensure both sides adhere to it.
Rubio further stated that US officials had discussed territorial concessions during their talks with the Ukrainians, adding that the bulk of the discussions centred on what a negotiation process would entail.
According to him, a critical minerals deal the US hopes to sign with Ukraine would benefit both sides, but he did not consider it a security guarantee—something Ukraine has been pushing for.
