Edo guber tribunal: Be neutral, impartial – Group tasks Chief Judge

A socio-political group, the Ijaw Youth Brigade, has tasked the Chief Judge of Edo State to be neutral and impartial in handling the election tribunal proceedings which is set to commence today, Monday.

This is coming following heightened tensions surrounding the outcome of the September 21 election, with various stakeholders looking up to the judiciary to remain impartial.

In a statement, the leader of the group, Mr Bimode Borowari, urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council, NJC, to pay special attention to the tribunal proceedings in Edo State to ensure the integrity of the process.

While acknowledging the critical role of the judiciary in upholding democratic principles, especially in election-related cases, the group said the public’s confidence in the electoral system hinges on a transparent and unbiased tribunal process.

According to him, the need for a neutral stance is essential to preserving the integrity of judicial decisions that could have far-reaching implications for the political landscape of the state.

“Reports reaching us from various sources, and investigations reveal that the PDP and its candidate are relying on some persons in the judiciary to manipulate rulings in their favour.

“We want to use this medium to call on the Chief Judge not to fall to this ploy as Edo people are watching keenly with interest and will resist any form of manipulation or partiality.

“As the tribunal sessions continue, all eyes will be on the Chief Judge and the judiciary’s handling of the proceedings. The group’s stance serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between the judiciary and the political arena, aiming to assure citizens of a fair election process.

“Stakeholders from various political parties are encouraged to remain vigilant and uphold the principles of democracy as the state navigates these critical judicial proceedings.

“The outcome of the tribunal is expected to influence future political dynamics in Edo State, making the necessity for a fair and neutral judiciary more pressing than ever,” Borowari said.
