Amotekun denies alleged plot to take over Osun LG secretariats

The Osun Amotekun Corps has refuted allegations that it plans to forcefully take over local government council secretariats across the state.

The security agency denied the allegations in a statement by the Corps Commander, Isaac Omoyele. The statement was released by the Public Relations Officer, Yusuf Idowu Abass on Tuesday in Osogbo.

Osun Amotekun which warned politicians against issuing statements capable of inciting public unrest, noted that such remarks threaten the stability and security of the state.

It described the accusations as baseless, irresponsible, and intended to mislead the public and asserted that the Corps has not received any directive to interfere with council operations.

The statement added, “Our mandate remains clear: to provide intelligence-driven, community-based security services within the confines of the law. At no time have we deviated from that responsibility.

“Osun Amotekun is a non-partisan agency committed to the rule of law and the safety of all residents across the 30 local government areas. We will not be drawn into political theatrics or allow our name to be used in any form of reckless politicking.”

Osun Amotekun also acknowledged the importance of oversight and public engagement and affirmed its dedication to professionalism and lawful conducts while condemning attempts to misrepresent its role or tarnish its image.

“We urge the public to disregard these unfounded allegations. Our commitment to peace, lawful conduct, and professional integrity remains unwavering,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, DAILY POST gathered that Bola Oyebamiji, an Osun All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship aspirant, had levelled the allegation against the security agency.

Oyebamiji, who is the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, raised the allegations in a statement on Saturday in reaction to the recent Court of Appeal ruling concerning the status of APC-elected local government officials.

The APC chieftain had insisted that the Friday ruling by the Court of Appeal in Akure reaffirmed the February 10, 2025 judgment, which had reinstated APC-led chairmen and councillors across Osun’s local government areas.

He warned the state government against any attempt to use the Amotekun Corps to dislodge the reinstated officials, saying such action would be provocative and unlawful.

He said, “The misleading commentary by handlers of Governor Ademola Adeleke is capable of inciting the public against the duly elected local government executives.”

Oyebamiji declared that the state government had reached a deadend in its legal challenge over control of the councils, noting that the opportunity to seek redress at the Supreme Court had expired.

“I urge Governor Adeleke to prioritise peace and avoid a repeat of the February 17, 2025 violence, during which Hon Remi Abass, former Chairman of Irewole Local Government, was killed,” he advised.
